RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilian airlines TAM and Gol appear in a ranking of the 5 most dangerous airlines in the world, according to a study by the German company Jacdec. The survey, which assessed the 60 largest airlines in the world over the last 30 years, puts TAM and Gol in second and fourth place.
According to Jacdec, Gol suffered 154 dead in a September 2006 accident, when one of its airliners crashed in the Amazon. TAM had six accidents in the period, which claimed 336 victims. One occurred in 2007, when 199 people died in Sao Paulo.
The study compares the number of accidents and the number of deaths to the number of passengers carried by each company over the past 30 years.
The Brazilian Association of Airline Companies (ABEAR), which represents Avianca, Azul, TAM and Gol, says that the Jacdec study does not reflect the current state of airline security.
“It is not a safety assessment; it is only a summary of accidents. This company totals the history of accidents and considers the number of victims. This index does not reflect the current safety or security situation of an airline,” said Ronaldo Jenkins, Director of Security Operations for ABEAR.
