Twins Sofia and Roberto arrived at 10:30 p.m., Oct. 23. Doctor Orlando de Castro Neto at Hospital San Lucas performed a Cesarean section after only 31 weeks gestation. Mother and babies, each weighing about two pounds, are doing well.
“I’m extremely happy. I fulfilled my dream of being a mother. Thank God and the doctor. I tried so hard, but thanks to God, I did it. I never for a moment thought about quitting. I always wanted to be a mother. We never had a lot of money, but we saved a lot to achieve our dreams,” Antonia told G1.
Despite her advanced age, Antonia says she is particularly well suited to love and care for children. “I’m OK. I am very well disposed to take care of them. I do not consider myself 61. I guess my birthdate must be wrong,” she joked.
New dad Jose, a carpenter, supported his wife throughout her treatment. The same gynecologist treated Antonia for 20 years, before she eventually became pregnant with twins.
According to the hospital, despite the high-risk pregnancy, babies are doing well. “The mother is in good condition and well, despite the great risk of pregnancy at an advanced age can bring. Babies are also good. They should be hospitalized a few weeks until they reach ideal weight.”
