RIO DE JANEIRO – Police in the Amazon arrested three suspected drug traffickers Friday, who they say pulled teeth from debtors. Authorities in Manaus say the trio, a couple and a 19-year-old man, would knock out the teeth of customers who could not pay their drug bills on time.
Police started an investigation after complaints from residents and relatives of those who lost teeth to the ruthless dealers. Police serving search warrants recovered a hoard of human teeth from the traffickers, supporting the complaints.
Authorities also recovered large bundles of marijuana, oxycodone and cocaine. They also seized a precision scale, cellphones and cash.
They found some of the confiscated material in the home of the couple. The rest, including the teeth, came from the home of the teen.
All three face charges of drug trafficking, and a penalty of prison time if convicted.
