RIO DE JANEIRO – Using a laptop computer, bandits stole an undisclosed amount of cash from two Bank of Brazil ATMs in metropolitan Salvador, Bahia, early Monday, reported Brazilian online media. According to police, the branch manager noticed the theft in the morning, when he arrived to open the branch office in Mata de Sao Joao, Bahia.
ATM Crime in Brazil
Every day in Brazil, thieves use dynamite to blast open ATMs to steal cash. Using technology to carry out the goal is rare, but not unheard of, say police.
According to authorities, the suspects accessed the machine’s internal circuitry through the built-in camera. They used clips to connect a laptop computer to the wires running to the device’s electronic control unit, then opened them with the help of computer programs.
“This was done by people who knew what they were doing. Experts say it is a very advanced crime,” one investigator told TV Bahia. Police also said that they are awaiting the CCTV footage, which they hope will give them some leads.
“We have police on the streets looking for the suspects who got away. We have heard of this kind of theft before, but it is quite rare. Unfortunately, crime will become more complex, but we are investigating, consulting experts we hope will tell us what to look for,” emphasized the investigator.
