SAO PAULO – Police released graphic video showing a woman and her daughter run down by a car at the entrance to Congonhas International Airport Saturday. Airport security cameras recorded the images, which show the moment the car jumps the curb, invades the sidewalk and strikes the women, early Saturday morning.
The mother, 56, died and her daughter, 27, remains hospitalized in serious condition.
According to police, the driver had consumed alcohol before the accident. He lost control of the vehicle, entered the sidewalk, struck the women and narrowly missed another pedestrian before he hit a wall.
According to the airport authority, the accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. along Avenida Washington Luis. First responders administered first aid and transported the women to hospital. The mother arrived dead and the daughter underwent surgery but miraculously suffered no fractures.
Police detained the 23-year-old driver who admitted that he had drunk alcohol the night before at a year-end party. The driver did not have enough alcohol in his blood to allow police to charge him with drunken driving. However, police did book him administratively for driving after drinking, a serious infraction under Brazil’s nationwide prohibition.
