RIO DE JANEIRO – A glass-bottomed bar suspended by a crane 130 feet above Enseada Beach, in Guaruja, on the Sao Paulo Coast is the big attraction this summer. The structure is 40 meters high, provides a panoramic view of the waterfront and an open bar.

A 10-minute ride to enjoy the view of the coastline, including a drink, cost R$25 reais (about $12.50 US). The bar is all glass, allowing customers to look directly down through the floor as the structure rises to full altitude.

It takes about 2 minutes to reach the top, during which only those with iron stomachs avoid butterflies. When it comes to a halt at the top, though, riders can enjoy the view with a sense of security as the bar stabilizes.

For safety, everybody wears a belt attached to the bar and remains seated. The only person allowed to stand is the bartender, who also wears a safety harness.

According to the attraction organizer, the entrance fee allows patrons to enjoy 10 minutes aloft plus an open bar. “The scheme is an open bar; while drinking at the bar the client remains suspended for 10 minutes,” says the manager. She adds that there is no age limit either. “Many families bring the children, and they love it,” she told G1.

The bar can support 12 tons and accommodates 16 patrons. One rider, merchant Gerson Scriptore going up for the first time told reporter Anna Gabriela Ribeiro of G1 Santos: “I loved it. I dragged my daughter, but my wife was afraid to go up.”

Students Natalia Rocha and Camilla Veraldi, both 18, also enjoyed the experience. “The view from here is exceptionally beautiful. At first, it is scary, but then you relax as it rises and you enjoy the view. It is beautiful to see the beach from above,” Natalia told the G1 reporter.

The “Bar on High” is a traveling attraction and is on Enseada Beach through Carnaval. The bar, located on Avenida Miguel Stefano 2000, opens daily at 4 p.m.
