RIO DE JANEIRO – Miss Plus Size Brazil, Barbara Monteiro, is preparing to compete in the Miss Plus Caribbean Universe Pageant next week. Crowned Brazil’s most beautiful plus-sized woman at a Sao Paulo pageant in January, Barbara stands 1.65 meters (5’5”) and tips the scales at 80 kilos (176 lbs).

The contest is for women who wear size 46 (U.S. 16) and above. “It’s a challenging mission, but I promise I’ll try my best,” Barbara told G1.
Barbara is 38 and has a law degree. Currently, however, she works as a model, posing for brands for “chubby” women. Miss Brazil vows she will show the world what a real Brazilian woman looks like.
“I’ll show the Brazilian woman to the world. A curvy woman, a real woman. This is not a contest that makes an excuse for obesity. We are healthy, we dance, we workout. And so we are happy.”
Plus size contestants from Brazil, the United States and the Caribbean will compete August 19, in Barbados. The women will show off their curves in Evening Gown, Swimsuit and National Costume. Just like in other pageants, the contestants face interviews and must demonstrate a talent.
