Aircraft Carrier Sao Paulo Hit by Fire

| RIO DE JANEIRO – A sailor was killed and two were injured in a fire that hit the aircraft carrier Sao Paulo in the early hours of Wednesday. The warship is docked at Ilha das Cobras, in Rio de Janeiro.

The Sao Paulo is the largest warship in Latin America. The injured were taken to Marcilio Dias Naval Hospital for treatment. One of the injured perished and the other was reported by the Navy to be in stable condition in the ICU.

According to a press release from the Navy, the fire broke out in a lower level in the stern of the ship at about 3:00 am, Wednesday morning. The cause is unknown. The fire was extinguished by specially trained firefighters on board ship.

Military police are investigating the fire.
