The aim of the auction, according to the office of Soraia Cals, who organized the event, is to offset the cost of the R$30 million real renovation of the main building, which will begin June 28. The remodeling will take about 90 days.

The company said that they can not estimate how much money the auction will raise, since there are no reserve prices. Any item for auction could be sold for as little as one real (fifty cents).

Before the auction, between June 30 and July 2nd, the 1,000 furniture and other objects up for auction will be on display at the hotel. There are 600 lots.

Among the items are headboards, wooden tables, pictures, rugs, quilts and tapestries. Also desks, dressers, wooden chairs, armchairs, upholstered sofas and lamps.

The organizer of the auction explains that although the pieces do not have high intrinsic value, they do have emotional and historic significance. The items come from rooms which, over the decades, have housed celebrities like Lady Diana, Bono, Orson Welles and the Rolling Stones.

Other famous guests over the years include Madonna, Michael Jackson, Walt Disney, Elton John, Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth, Gina Lollobrigida, Brigitte Bardot and Luciano Pavarotti.

Located right on Copacabana beach, the Copacabana Palace is unquestionably South America’s most famous hotel and has welcomed the rich and famous for nearly nine decades. In 2008, the City of Rio de Janeiro confirmed the Copacabana Palace as a cultural patrimony of the municipality.
