RIO DE JANEIRO – Police arrested a 70-year-old woman on Tuesday, accusing her of masterminding the murder of her own son. They say that she paid R$20 thousand reals (about $10 thousand dollars) to have her son killed, reported online media.
Septuagenarian Accused in Slaying of Son
According to investigators, the mother, identified as Maria Selma dos Santos wanted to manage the family estate, which was in the hands of her son, Jose Fernandes dos Santos Reis, 52.
The woman asked her maid, Maria Jose Dias da Silva, 42, to find someone to kill her son. The police accuse Isaac Paulo de Moraes of killing Jose with three fatal shots – two in the head and one in the chest – 29 November last year.
Investigators came to suspect the mother after several witnesses, including the maid and represented by the same attorney, came forward to give statements. When asked to the police station to answer questions about the murder, the woman arrived with an attorney.
“We have never seen the mother of a victim hire a lawyer to accompany her while giving a statement to police about her son’s death,” said delegate Márcio Esteves.
