RIO DE JANEIRO – Friday morning, somebody vandalized the building housing the Russian consulate in Brazil’s southernmost capital city, Porto Alegre. According to reports in online media, slogans painted on the facade of the building, in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, demand freedom for members of the jailed punk band Pussy Riot and called Russian president Vladimir Putin a fascist.

A nearby business called firefighters when they noticed a burning tire on the street in front of the consulate. Firefighters put out the fire and notified police, who have no suspects in custody.

A court in Moscow sentenced members of the band Pussy Riot – Nadejda Tolokonikova, 22, Samutsevich Yekaterina, 30 and Maria Alekhina, 24 – to two years in prison for protesting against Russian President Vladimir Putin inside a cathedral. Lawyers representing the women hope to file an appeal next week.

The group FEMEN Brasil protested in front of the Russian consulate in Sao Paulo last week. During that demonstration, topless protesters chanted slogans and threw a substance variously described in the media as “paint” and “dyed water” on the exterior walls of the consulate.
