‘Jetman’ Flies Around Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO – Swiss aviator Yves Rossy, known as Jetman, flew around Rio de Janeiro today, 2 May 2012. He jumped from a helicopter high above the Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado, activated his equipment, and used his body to fly around the statue and eventually land on Copacabana Beach in the city’s South Zone.

The equipment is comprised of a carbon-kevlar Jetwing, which Jetman uses his body to steer, powered by jet engines.

According to the Breitling website, the wings are rigid and the outfit is powered by four jet engines. Trajectory and altitude are adjusted by body movements alone. The Breitling Jet Team is the world’s largest professional civilian aerobatics team performing on jets.
