BRASILIA — Brazilians with access to broadband internet grew 73% between June 2011, and June 2012, with 32.8 million new connections. According to the Brazilian Association of Telecommunications (Telebrasil), the number of broadband internet connections reached 77.5 million at the end of the first half of 2012.

The total number of broadband internet connections included 18.7 million fixed and 58.8 million mobile. Of the total mobile users, 12.3 million are data terminals–such as credit card machines used by food servers in restaurants–and 46.5 million are 3G phones, including smartphones.

According to the association, fixed broadband internet connections grew 11.3% in the last 12 months and the number of mobile broadband internet connections doubled in that period, an increase of 30.9 million new connections.

Third-generation cellular connections grew 118% since June last year. Apple began producing the iPhone in Brazil last year at a Foxconn plant in Jundaí, São Paulo.
