RIO DE JANEIRO – The City of Rio de Janeiro finally “unwrapped” the monument given it by the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, during Rio +20, reported Brazil’s largest circulation newspaper. The Middle East leader presented the statue to the city during the U.N. Conference on the Environment held here in June. The city will not hold an official inauguration ceremony.

After installing the monument – a replica of the columns of the historic city of Persepolis in Iran – on Avenida Pedro II, in Sao Cristovao, in the North Zone of the city, it spent more than a month wrapped in black plastic.

Last month, the city announced that the inauguration would take place in 15 days. Then on Sept. 7, the press office of the Secretary of Conservation informed Folha de Sao Paulo that they would dedicate the statue by the end of the month.

Folha reported in July, rumors that the city canceled the planned June inauguration of the statue because local officials did not want to be photographed next to Iran’s dictator.

Tuesday, by telephone, the press office told Folha that it completed the installation already but that there will be no formal opening. When contacted by Folha, the Iranian embassy in Brazil did not comment.

Comment on the document about Ahmadinejad, I hope the local official has been consistent and does not have any photos with prime minister Blair and president Bush who in an illegal unilateral war killed more than 1 million innocents in Iraq, and all just for few more years of control over other poor nations resources?
Please keep up the good work and try to stay free from any prejudice and bias.
