RIO DE JANEIRO – An attractive 20-year-old virgin from Southern Brazil is auctioning off her first sexual experience to the highest bidder, reported online media. Although the auction – brainchild of an Australian documentary filmmaker – does not end until Oct. 15, bids have already reached $780 thousand dollars (Last updated: November 28, 2012 at 11:48 am).

“I’m happy because it is an adventure for me. I decided to embark on this adventure, and I’ll see what happens, but I am at peace,” Catarina Migliorini told a reporter for Terra. She went on to say she had her first kiss when she was 17 years old. “Everybody had already been kissing, but not me. I am growing, maturing and still hope to find the one person to love me unconditionally. This is just a business deal for me,” she added.

Australian director Justin Sisely created the Virgins Wanted site two years ago. Physical Education student Catarina, a native of Itapema in northern Santa Catarina state, decided to apply for the job after coming across the website. With the help of her brother and a camera, she prepared the video she sent to the producer Thomas William Productions. She learned later that the producer selected her for the project, and she says that she has the full support of her family. “My mother is my best friend because she always talked to me a lot. She gives her opinion, but she gives me freedom to make my own decisions,” she says.

According the auction website, Catarina must submit to a gynecological examination to prove her innocence. There are also conditions attached, such as no oral sex, no voyeurism, no kissing.

Both Catarina and the auction winner will have to provide a certificate of health, since the sex will be without a condom.

The deflowering is to occur on a plane trip from Australia to the United States, to avoid legal problems related to prostitution. “This decision was made not to have trouble with the law of any country,” the girl told G1.

She says that the opportunity to visit new places and meet new people and to appear in the documentary film is exciting. “In Brazil, values are reversed: an unscrupulous person with money has more value than an honest person without material resources,” she says. Catarina received $20 thousand dollars when she signed the contract, and she receives all the money from the winning bid.

The fetching young woman, fond of piano and philosophy, quotes the American philosopher Henry David Thoreau in answering criticism she is receiving about her decision to sell her virginity: “Public opinion is a weak tyrant compared with our own private opinion.” She says that she has a clear conscience. “I am responsible for myself and my body. People who condemn me should worry about those who are hungry or in need of some support,” she added.

Catarina said many women lose their virginity in “cheap” ways. “Lots of people meet strangers in bars, have sex the same night and remember nothing the next day. Others lose their virginity to boyfriends and then things change. For me, the most important thing in life is not to harm others,” said Catarina.

Catarina will experience sex for the first time 10 days after the auction closes Oct. 15. As for the unknown partner, Catarina says emphatically “I am not worried about it. It is a business deal. I have no problem.” She says that she will not continue in the business after this one experience. She plans on going to medical school in Argentina using the proceeds of the auction to pay her way.

Australia’s Herald Sun newspaper first reported on Sisely’s controversial film in 2009. Focus on the Family spokesperson Deb Sorensen said she had concern about the impact the film would have in promoting sex as a commodity. “They’re so young and vulnerable they are not going to be thinking through the consequences,” said Sorensen.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, Sisely’s plans to auction another woman’s virginity, this one from Sydney, Australia, made international headlines a few years ago. The 18-year-old pulled out after her family and friends became appalled upon hearing her plans.

Pastor Jaime Kemp, leader of an evangelical family ministry that guides Brazilian youth, told the Portuguese-language version of the Christian Post website that the news saddens him, and he called it “abuse.”

Kemp said that the project is an immoral promotion to make money and that it amounts to “abuse of a girl.”

“The mother is giving her daughter for prostitution. It will mark her for life. Everyone will know that she earned money,” said the pastor. “Virginity is priceless,” he added.

Filming of the documentary started about a month ago in Bali, Indonesia. The production is part of the project. The video will record the history of the young and the preparations for the auction, up until the time she looses her virginity. “They shoot my daily life, my new friends here, when I speak with my mother, my reactions,” explains Catarina. The film has no release date.
