GOIANIA, Brazil – The sudden presence of two stray dogs is causing intrigue among officials at the municipal cemetery in Novo Gama, Goiás. Workers believe that they may have belonged to one of the people recently buried there.

Stray Dogs Living in Cemetery Intrigue

The two animals arrived at the graveyard on May 5th, after there had been some burials. Despite several attempts by cemetery officials to take them somewhere else, they always end up coming back.

The Executive Director of the Novo Gama Cemetery, Eduardo Fontenelle gives his take on the stray dogs: “These stray dogs came to the burial with relatives, they came to live here in the cemetery with no clear reason, on account of that family.”

The families of the entombed said that they had never seen the stray dogs. The cemetery administrators have even brought the dogs to the neighborhoods near where the dead had lived and set them lose. After a while, the stray dogs always make their way back to the cemetery, which is several miles outside of town.

“It’s cold here, it rains and they are always still here. We give them water and some food so they don’t feel so abandoned,” said one of the gravediggers.

The case of the two stray dogs living in the cemetery brings to mind a story we told you last December. A dog named “Princess” followed her owner to a hospital in Vitoria after he was taken away by ambulance following an automobile accident.

The owner died at the hospital but the dog took up residence outside waiting for him to return. Eventually, a woman took pity on the dog, and dropped her off at an animal shelter.
