The cops, on foot patrol in Curitiba, the capital of Paraná, spotted two homeless men drinking cachaça in the public square and realized that they were sharing their drink with the puppy.

Seeing the officers approach, the men fled and were not captured.

The lucky dog, who reeked of booze and staggered when he walked, captured the officer’s affection as soon as they saw him.

The good-hearted lawmen took the pup to an animal hospital where the vet diagnosed him with early alcoholic coma. The doc prescribed three doses of glucose, which the officers paid for out of their own pockets.

With the puppy out of the woods, the two cops mobilized to make sure they found him a good home. They enlisted the help of photographer João Carlos Frigério, who works for the police department. João snapped some photos and broke the story on social networks.

The photographer’s friend, Karina Ancioto decided to adopt the hapless pup and she named him ‘Whiskey’. “I sympathized with the puppy’s situation. He is helpless and malnourished,” recalls Karina to G1.

The vet prepared a diet rich in iron and protein to help Whiskey recover. “He has gained 200 grams. You realize that the puppy is quite happy and quite attached to me,” Karina told G1 on Monday.
