RIO DE JANEIRO – A bus in the interior of Rio de Janeiro state ran off a mountain highway Monday (22 Oct.) afternoon, killing 11 people including the driver, reported online media. At least 8 people also suffered injuries when the bus went off the Rio-Teresopolis road (BR-116) near the town of Guapimirim, 102 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro. (Early reports of 30 injuries proved incorrect).

According to a representative for the company that owns the bus, it left the City of Itaperuna, in Northwestern Rio de Janeiro, at 9 a.m. Monday carrying 29 people. At the time of the accident, the number of passengers would have been higher, as the bus stopped in other cities. The doomed vehicle was scheduled to arrive in the capital at 4 p.m.
According to first responders, hospitals in the cities of Mage, Teresopolis and Guapimirim are treating accident victims. Hospital Miguel Couto in the South-Zone of Rio received two of the injured, a German man around 50 years old, who remains in serious condition and a woman, condition and age unreported.
Police reopened the two-lane highway after closing it for about 35 minutes while the Federal Highway Police investigated the accident. The road closure left traffic backed up about 4 kilometers in each direction.
