BLUMENAU, Brazil – Brazil’s Oktoberfest Blumenau 2012, the largest German-style, beer-swilling festival in Latin America, begins Wednesday (10). The festival, held in the mountains of Southern Brazil’s Santa Catarina state, officially kicks-off with the tapping of the first keg of beer at 10 p.m., in German Village Park.

Oktoberfest Blumenau 2012, inspired by the world-famous party in Munich, Germany, is the 29th annual festival. This year, the event runs from Oct. 10 to 28. Among the main attractions are the official parades, beginning Wednesday at 9:30 p.m., with performances of typical German music, and of course, consumption of copious amounts of beer.

Oktoberfest Blumenau mobilizes the entire city, although the celebration occurs mostly in German Park, a complex of 26 thousand square meters (about 280 thousand square feet) in the city’s Old Quarter.

Besides the beer pavilions, there are a number of shops with German architectural features where visitors can find items for sale reminiscent of the old country and essential for proper celebration of the beer-swilling party.

Restaurants and food stands serve German dishes: sausages, sandwiches and savory stuffed quail with baked potatoes – all bringing to mind the European equivalent. Visitors, eying the food, beer and light-skinned, blue-eyed natives dancing the Polka might imagine they were in the fatherland, not in the middle of the South American jungle.

Oktoberfest Blumenau 2011 drew almost 564 thousand visitors, more than the 550 thousand expected. That year, visitors consumed 626,547 liters of beer, representing a per-capita consumption of 1.11 liters. Organizers expect Oktoberfest Blumenau 2012 to attract even more visitors, consuming more beer than last year.

Brazil’s Oktoberfest in Blumenau, Santa Catarina state, is considered to be the second largest Oktoberfest in the world — only Munich’s party draws more people who consume more beer.
