RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazil’s first three-wheeled motor vehicle intended for use on city streets is in its last stages of approval by government regulators, reported online media Saturday. The Motocar, styled after the three-wheeled vehicles found in the Andean region of South America and the Indian tuk-tuk, should arrive in Sao Paulo showrooms next month and sell for about five thousand dollars.

The automaker expects the vehicle to win final approval from Brazilian federal regulators within the next 30 days. Motocar director Fabio Di Gregorio told the Portuguese-language G1 network that the vehicle has already passed all the various tests and is only awaiting “bureaucratic details” to be worked out.

The first 200 of the vehicles, assembled at a factory in Manaus, Amazonas state, have already been sold. Upon approval, the automaker will ship units to dealers in the states of Sao Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Parana, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goias, Pernambuco, Amazonas and Para.

Similar three-wheeled vehicles are already circulating in the states of Amazonas and Para. The automaker imported foreign models last year to gauge consumer acceptance in the domestic market.

The Motocar carries up to three people – a driver and two passengers. Because the cabin has a roof, neither the driver nor the passengers legally have to wear helmets.

The Motocar is comparable in power to a 150 cc motorcycle, has a maximum speed of 70 km/h (about 43 mph), and has a rack, which can handle 50 kilos (110 pounds) of cargo.
