RIO DE JANEIRO — The United States Embassy and consulates in Brazil increased the number of visas issued in July by 24 percent, compared with the same month of 2011, reported online media Monday. The U.S. issued 81,737 visas in July and 648,178 so far this year at its offices in Brazil.
U.S. Issues Brazilians More Travel Visas
In addition to the embassy in Brasilia, the U.S. maintains consular offices in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Recife.
The U.S. Consulate in Rio de Janeiro saw the largest increase over the same month last year, issuing 25,121 visas in July – a 50 percent increase over 2011. The consulate in Rio handled an average of 1,256 visa applications per day.
The data released Monday by the U.S. Embassy also show that the average number of applications at the consulate in Sao Paulo grew by 26 percent compared to July 2011. The consulate processed an average of 2,175 applications per day.
Recife saw the only decrease in visa applications in July, falling 7 percent from last year, to 294.
The average waiting time for scheduling was two days in Sao Paulo and Recife. The average in Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro was one day.
