SAO PAULO – A Sao Paulo judge has awarded temporary custody of Elize and Marcos Matsunaga’s daughter to members of the slain man’s family. Elize, 30, remains in jail charged with killing her husband Marcos, 41, dismembering his body and scattering the remains around Sao Paulo.

The Sao Paulo court also once again denied bail to Elize, a former escort. Elize’s husband Marcos was a wealthy food industry executive and heir. The slain man was CEO of Yoki Alimentos, which recently sold to General Mills for nearly one billion U.S. dollars, and heir to the Matsunaga family fortune.
According to the court order, the temporary custody will last for 180 days. The toddler stands to inherit a fortune from her late father’s estate, valued at close to one hundred million U.S. dollars.
The girl, now almost 2 years old, will stay with Marcos’ parents. The child had been staying with a maternal aunt, in the penthouse condominium where the couple lived together until the time of the slaying.
The child’s mother confessed to killing her husband, claiming self-defense after he became enraged when she confronted him with photographic evidence of his adultery. She shot her husband in the head with a handgun he had given her as a gift some time before.
Elize and Marcos met each other in 2004. The couple married two years before the killing. They met while Elize was working as a call girl, advertising her services on a Sao Paulo website. Several years later, she became pregnant. Marcos divorced his first wife and married her. She gave birth to their daughter months later.
Shortly after the slaying, the victim’s family insisted on verifying his paternity with a DNA test. The family backed off, however, when public opinion swiftly turned against them. The case has captured the attention of the nation, instigating discussion on topics such as fidelity in marriage and domestic violence.
Elize confessed to the killing shortly after police arrested her June 4. Police said at the time that Elize was the only suspect, since CCTV footage from the couple’s condominium building showed Marcos arriving home May 19, but never leaving. The footage showed Elize leaving the building the next day with some suitcases, which she later admitted contained the remains of her husband.
